YOUR TOP 10 WINTER CHECK LIST - KEEP YOUR HORSE SAFE!

Make sure your horse is safe and secure this winter in both the yard and stable, you will be amazed how much wear and tear or damage can be done in a year. Below is a simple check list that will help you get on top of the essentials before the dark nights draw in and the cold weather arrives.

1. Check all electric wiring for any vermin damage - Tape up secure or replace.

2. Clean or replace light bulbs and covers, remove any cobwebs around the light to avoid the risk of fire.

3. Test all outdoor lighting and fit energy saving bulbs where possible, they may be slightly dimmer but they are a lot cheaper to run as they will be used a lot in the coming darker months

5. Insulate all outside pipes in time for the freezing conditions.
Mend dripping taps - not only are you wasting water,
they produce skating rinks and freeze up quicker.
Loosely stuff straw or old hay into plasticfeed bags to wrap around and insulate
all the out door taps during freezing conditions.

6. Harrow or roll the turnout paddocks particularly gateways so the ground will be level when the frost
comes. Frozen poached areas can injure your horse and yourself,
( paddock maintenance)
7. Treat all you tack with a leather feed, brittle or cracked leather can break in wet and cold conditions.

8. Buy some rock salt while there is plenty in stock and have ready and accessible for the icy pathways
and water areas.

9. Collect and clean as many water carriers as you can. Filling them up when the taps are running and
storing them frost free can save time in the mornings for the thaw.

10. Ensure you have a good flash light and spare batteries available around the yard, the stables and in the car.   For more horse care tips in the stable click here
