What better way to kick off a new season than with training and advice from Lucinda Green MBE? The world and European champion, Olympic silver medallist and the only rider to have won Badminton on six different horses, is indisputably one of the world’s leading coaches in cross-country riding.
Those seeking to improve their confidence and way of going will have the choice of five (four two-day and one, one-day) coaching masterclasses taking place at venues across the country from Surrey to Yorkshire and Cheshire to Lincolnshire.
Lucinda’s particular passion and speciality is in helping riders understand the way that horses think and react while tackling the challenges that riding across thecountry presents. The aim of the Petplan Masterclass with Lucinda is to strengthen both horse and rider confidence and provide a reaction sharpener in order to concentrate on safer, more fun cross-country riding.
Senior Marketing Executive for Petplan Equine, Charlotte Collyer, is an amateur event rider who has participated in Lucinda’s clinics. She says: “There is something about the way that Lucinda builds up our confidence and teaches us to ride more accurately that makes even the more difficult fences or combinations seem quite easy.”
“The important message that I try to impart in my Masterclasses is that cross-country riding is not about sitting on a horse, going flat out,” explains Lucinda. “Our job as riders is to do three things: firstly, to be in charge of the horse’s engine; secondly, to ensure our horse sees and holds the appropriate line into a fence - ensuring he has focused on the fence in plenty of time and finally, to keep both our horses and ourselves in balance. Developing confidence as riders will be reflected in our horses. A horse who in equal measure, listens to his rider and thinks for himself is going to be a safer horse across country. ”
Each Petplan Masterclass with Lucinda is designed to develop mutual confidence between horse and rider and encourage the horse to think for himself but still listen to his rider. In the two hour session on day one of the two day clinics Lucinda will use poles and stands to create skinnies, corners, combinations and awkward lines with the aim of developing communication and confidence preparing both horse and rider for the cross country course session on day two. Lucinda takes time to ensure each horse and rider feels comfortable with what is being asked before moving on to difficult challenges. On any one day there will usually be four groups with five or six horse and rider combinations grouped together according to their level. Theclinics can be tailored to suit riders of a wide range of abilities from those preparing for their first event or sponsored ride to those aiming for Badminton. However, from the outset, horse and rider should be confident jumping a course of at least 2’6”, and riders should be aged 13 years or older.
