BYE BYE ITCH
feed supplement and BYE BYE ITCH lotion are unique products formulated by Hilary Self Bsc MNIMH, resident medical herbalist at Hilton Herbs.  Formulated to tackle seasonal itching (sweet itch) in equines the products have undergone extensive and highly successful trials.  The field trials were conducted using 35 equines located around the UK, all of whom had a history of allergic itching, and the results were hugely successful.  CLICK HERE to see the results of the trials.

In formulating the Bye Bye Itch supplement Hilary drew on research into the use of essential fatty acids (EFAs) in the prevention and treatment of seasonal pruritis, conducted by Guelph University, Ontario, Canada, and published in the Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research.  The study involved six horses who displayed a positive skin test for allergy to extract from the midge Culicoides sp and participated in a 42 day placebo‚Äö√Ñ√¨controlled, double-blind, cross‚Äö√Ñ√¨over trial where the six horses were given linseed (flaxseed) daily over a period of 42 days.
The study concluded that the use of the linseed was able to alter the fatty acid profile of the horses' hair, reduce inflammation, reduce the inflammatory response to the skin test, and reduce the area of lesions on the trial horses.  The study also concluded that no negative side‚Äö√Ñ√¨effects were elicited in the experimental horses.
N.B Participants in the Hilton Herbs product trials confirmed similar results to the Guelph University trials, namely a reduction in irritation, inflammation, and subsequent skin lesions, with no negative side effects.
Brewers Yeast is included as a result of trials undertaken in the Netherlands on 50 horses with a history of Sweet Itch were given a supplement containing Vitamin B1, B2, B6, B9, B12, C & E, plus amino acids, choline and magnesium.  Brewers Yeast contains all these elements and more. The supplement appeared to help reduce the horses' allergic response to the Culicoides sp midge.  Although originally a by-product of the brewing industry, nowadays Brewers Yeast is grown specifically to make the nutritional supplement.
Brewers Yeast tastes bitter and the aroma that is excreted by the pores can help deter the midges, it is proposed that the yeast makes the blood unpalatable to midges and mosquitos. Brewers Yeast is an excellent source of B-complex vitamins, chromium, and selenium. The B-complex vitamins in Brewers Yeast include B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin) which increases the production of prostaglandins, hormone-like chemicals the tissues produce to help control such physiological responses as inflammation.  It also contains B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folic acid), and B7 (biotin) which help break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins,
It is as a result of the previously mentioned research these ingredients were chosen for their ability to reduce irritation and to reduce the allergic response to biting insects, ease inflammation, generally improve skin and hair condition, integrity, and growth.  Additional herbs in the Bye Bye Itch offer both anti-allergic and anti-histamine actions, whilst ingredients rich in silica, will help stimulate strong new hair growth and improve skin condition, which is vital to help with the tough abraded 'elephant' skin that develops in response to the chronic itching.
BYE BYE ITCH Lotion contains ingredients which restore skin integrity and condition following repeated itching.  Some horse or ponies are prone to prolonged and repeated itching, rubbing, and scratching, which can result in damage to the mane, tail, or sensitive areas of the body.  Bye Bye Itch lotion does exactly what it says on the label, just  smooth onto the appropriate area and massage well in to help soothe irritation and encourage healthy hair re‚Äö√Ñ√¨growth.  We recommend using the Bye Bye Itch lotion in conjunction with the Bye Bye Itch supplement.
The Bye Bye Itch feed supplement is available in sizes from 2kg with a retail price of ¬¨¬£24.  The lotion is available in sizes from 500mls with a retail price of ¬¨¬£15.  Approximate daily cost for a 15.2 hand horse would be 12p.
